Watched two episodes?// the first two films of the Lord of The Rings Trilogy last night. While not perhaps entirely relevant to my current predicament , they are rather great texts. Especially when viewed with the theme of place in mind. I couldn’t help but notice the multiplicities of place and identities they explore. Also there is rather a lot about hierarchy implicit in the plot. Learned J.R.R Tolkien was born in the same country as me. Rather nice symmetry when reflecting on my own identity. Also bizarre to experience the dichotomy presented by the creation of a fantasy land in landscapes that are local / familiar. The narrative and visual commentary draws the viewer into the romantic , extravagant imaginings of middle earth, which are then disrupted by the realisation that I do in fact live in “Middle Earth”. Wanting to live in Middle Earth and desiring to live in Matamata are not quite the same thing I find. … Disruptive.
